We continue with our step-by-step guide to building your gaming PC from scratch! After preparing the skeleton of your system and the power supply, it’s time to install the crucial components that will determine your machine’s performance and make you invincible in every game.
Installing the RAM
RAM is essential for system performance as it allows quick access to the temporary data the CPU needs to run applications and games. The more RAM available, the more data can be accessed quickly, improving overall performance.
For installation, open the tabs of the RAM slots on the motherboard. Make sure to align the notch on the RAM with the slot. Press it firmly until the tabs automatically close, indicating the RAM is correctly installed.
Tip: Ensure you install the RAM in the appropriate slots to take advantage of dual mode if your motherboard supports it.
Installing the Graphics Card (GPU)
The GPU is responsible for rendering graphics and handling visual calculations. Modern games heavily rely on a powerful graphics card to deliver detailed graphics and high frames per second (FPS).
Modern GPUs support advanced technologies like DirectX 12, Vulkan, and OpenGL, as well as enhancements like NVIDIA DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) and AMD FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution), which improve performance and visual quality.
Keep in mind that GPUs generate a significant amount of heat. A good cooling system is essential to maintain optimal temperatures and prevent throttling (speed reduction) due to overheating.
For installation, open the latch of the PCIe slot on the motherboard. Insert the GPU into the corresponding PCIe slot and make sure it’s fully seated. Now, screw the GPU to the case to secure it in place.
Connecting Storage Devices
Both SSDs and HDDs are important for storing your operating system, applications, and games.
Place the SSD or HDD in the corresponding compartments and connect them to the motherboard using SATA cables. Connect the power cables from the PSU as well.
Connecting Power Supply Cables
Ensuring proper electrical supply is fundamental for stable PC operation.
Connect the 24-pin cable to the motherboard, which is the main power cable. Connect the 8-pin cable that powers the CPU. Make sure to connect the necessary power cables for the GPU, SSD/HDD, and other components.
Tip: Organize the cables for optimal airflow and a tidy appearance.
Front Panel Case Cables
Connect the front panel case cables (USB, audio, power button, LEDs) to the motherboard.
Next, if needed, install additional fans. Place the fans in the desired positions (front air intake, rear exhaust, etc.). Connect them to the motherboard or PSU as appropriate.
It’s time to verify that all components are well connected and secured. Now it’s time to power on the PC and check that all components work correctly. If everything is correct, install the operating system from the installation USB.
Finally, install the necessary drivers for all components, update the operating system, configure your PC as needed, and you’re ready to play.
